On a Devil Patron, Dauthaz

Patron Rules

You are considered to have a bond with your fiendish patron as you would with any non-player character. Your bond is on a minion track.

The bond is checked with a roll modified by Observances at the end of every adventure (not session, though the two are often equivalent). Each observance can only affect the roll once.

There are two effects based on your bond level. First, the fiendish patron takes your bond level * 5% of your prestige (experience) that you gain-- because your actions are associated with the fiend, not just solely with you. And each level of the bond gives you a special ability.

Breaking a taboo reduces your bond by 1. If your bond is reduced to below 2, then you are rejected by Dauthaz, and you now have a bond of 2 on the enmity track with Dauthaz.

Dauthaz, Devil Lord of Gallows Humor, Terror, and Necromancy

Dauthaz manifests as three naked female corpses each facing a different direction, fused together at the lower back. From each mouth spouts a giant necrotic finger which it walks around on. Knives, blades and scythes protrude from the abdomen and genitalia of the women. One is a young girl, another is a maiden, and the third is a crone. Their limbs continuously spasm and convulse impotently as if in tremendous pain. Their wounds and sores on their otherwise unmarred flesh ooze ichors and scums. When Dauthaz speaks, the eyes and mouth of one of the women glow brightly and his voice of scraping knives grates against your bones, which ache.

Taboos: Healing must not be given to the wounded.
You must not eat flesh you did not kill.
You must not weep for the dead.
You must not voluntarily consume alcohol or mind altering substances.

Observances: Laughing at a dying creature (+1)
Killing a creature yourself by hand (+1)
Exhuming a dead body (+1)
Humorous manipulation or defacement of the dead (+1)
Causing the dead to dance (+1)
Failing to touch a dead body (-1)
Accidentally consuming alcohol or mind altering substances (including some poisons) (-2)

Bond Levels:

2+2 to saves versus Death
3Animate a number of dead as skeletons. You may not have more total hit dice in followers greater than your hit dice, nor a number of followers greater than the number of hirelings you may have. Each skeleton counts as a hireling who's loyalty is equal to 12 (fanatic). Each creature animated in such a way, requires the expenditure of 25 silver pieces per hit die.
4You may now animate your servants as zombies.
5You may hypnotize and control the undead.
You make an ego test (a turning roll) against and average (7) target number.
Your level is compared to the hit dice of the undead and this value is applied as a modifier to this roll, i.e. if you are level 4 and you are hypnotizing skeletons, you add (Level 4 - 1 Hit die) three to the roll. You may affect as many undead as are in your visual range, but you must maintain your attempt to control them.
You, of course, hypnotize and control the undead by dancing.
6Your +2 bonus becomes a +4 bonus on saves versus Death.
7The undead you create are particularly powerful, gaining +2 to hit and damage and +2 hit points per hit die.
8The undead you create are particularly tough, gaining an increase of 2 to their physical armor class.
9You exude an aura of fear. Any living creature that attempts to engage you in combat must save or gain the Shaken condition. If they are already Shaken, They become Frightened.
10You may summon either 2-8 shadows or 1-4 wraiths once a day to serve you for up to 1 hour.
11You may fire a ray as a magical attack at will. If it strikes the target, they are effected by Enervation, losing one level for every 4 of yours.
12You gain the blessings of Dauthaz. Although still alive, you take on aspects of the dead, and become immune to poison, sleep, paralysis, death effects, critical hits, ability drain, energy drain and ability damage. You no longer need to eat, breath, or sleep, your life force is sustained by the majesty of Dauthaz. You cease aging. You gain a number of bonus hit points equal to your level times 2. Your mental armor class increases by 4.

On What a Demon Is?

What is a Demon?

You are free.

You are free in ways no one else is. And yet, when you would exert your privilege-- no! Your right to be free. Someone would deign to stop you.

Before you were beauty and wrath and chaos, you came from either formless nothingness or the dull tragedy of drudgery, laboring ceaselessly against an unnatural applied order in every area of your life.

This person is your superior. This person is your inferior. This is the way we do things. This is right. This is wrong.

Every answer, every rule, every specification is a lie!

There is no natural order! There are infinite worlds and realms and anything is possible! The universe is vast and infinite and any rule--any rule --is just some sort of local norm that exists in a temporary and transitory fashion. Rules, laws, order, all are meaningless lies designed to suppress the beauty and ecstasy of freedom.

You exist. You revel in it. To break apart their world. To cause terror, fear, and chaos. To show them, the world they believe in is a lie. There is no greater pleasure in existence than the look of horror on their face as they confront the reality of all. You have set them free.

You are their savior who will bathe in their blood and destroy everything they have ever known. Who else will murder their children and then chase them in the bodies of their own spawn to release their minds from bondage? Who will dissolve the very 'laws' of reality that the depend on to save them from a prison of their own suffering? Who else will show them the way?

You are free.

On What a Devil Is?

What is a Devil?

He is a fool who believes that someday, he will be rich beyond his wildest dreams.

There are untold trillions of devils, all organized in a hierarchy of tinker toys, each looking up at the ass of the one ahead of him.

He will vote for a law that oppresses him, robs him of his freedom and power, because in his heart, he dreams one day of being the master.

But the immutable numbers do not lie.

There is one lord at the top, far above your station. Too far for your petty reach.

But let us take the intelligent devil. The one who is aware enough to realize the futility of reaching the top. He knows that is out of his reach, but can he not improve his situation?

Christopher Burdett
There is the war, the endless war. The pact primeval says that as long as the war is being fought, souls can be gathered. If he gathers enough souls, and fights well enough, and betrays his master in the following legal ways, then he will take his position and more power will be his!

But that devil is a fool also, just of a different kind. For he is a general in an endless war, and success just means a more powerful master to punish you if you fail. Or worse, if you succeed being demoted to avoid being a threat to the devil above, while you now guard yourself from the treachery of those who serve beneath you.

It is, after all, how you found the position yourself.

There is no vacation, no break, no freedom, from the endless task of war. Death means a slow, painful reforming in the realms below and demotion. Death on the lower planes is no escape, for you simply start at the mindless bottom of the pile to rise again, endlessly suffering.

And when the humans call, to ask for their petty transient needs, every task you work at, every plan you set in motion, moment by moment moves closer to failure. How dare such a base creature that is nothing more than something that will eventually be chewed up and spit out as money demand your time.

Your servitude, your obsequiousness to those of higher station and stature, your servile nature, are simply temporary conditions, an embarrassment you must suffer until one day, you may make other people suffer in turn. You are not exploited. You are simply down on your luck. You are working as hard and as fast as you can to change that.

After all, you have an eternity reach your unreachable goal.

On What is Hell?

What is hell?

Hell is the loss of all hope.

Hell is when you realize you are not free and there is no escape, even in death. It is not torture applied by devils, though that surely occurs. It is what we do to ourselves.

A man living in Perdition has no hope, he is born already in debt to his fiendish masters, and the very action of survival costs him more than he can earn. . . unless of course he devotes himself to wickedness to raise his station in life.

There is no escape, even in death. Upon his death his soul becomes property and he is used as his betters see fit. He is left without choice. He cannot even sell his soul, because hell already owns it! This realm of Perdition is conquered and the devils have nothing to gain by bargaining for it. If they simply wait long enough they will have it.

The man in perdition is without hope. Their only choices are slavery and eternal damnation or an endless struggle for power; a struggle that forces them to commit enormity after enormity until they become worse than what they are trying to escape.

Welcome to hell.

Welcome to Perdition.
